Why
A concentrated gel needs roughly 150–200 ml of water to reach the concentration the gut absorbs well. Isotonic gels carry that water inside the sachet, which is why they are larger and why they suit courses with sparse aid stations.
What matters: texture and osmolality more than the carb count. Liquid gels and chews digest without a bottle; thick gels are best paired with the aid station you are about to reach.
